Why does a boiler make noise?
Most boiler noises point to a fixable cause. A rumbling or "kettling" sound usually means mineral scale or sludge has built up on the heat exchanger; banging or knocking in the pipes is often trapped air or water hammer; and a whining circulator may have air in it or be starting to fail. Kettling in particular makes the boiler work harder and can shorten its life, so it's worth addressing early.
Should I repair or replace an old boiler?
If a boiler is under about 10 years old and the repair is minor, repairing usually makes sense. Replacement tends to be the better spend if it's 15+ years old, facing a major or repeated repair, badly oversized for the building, or fuel bills keep climbing — a correctly sized, modern condensing boiler often pays back the difference through lower fuel use over time.
Glycol vs. water — which should a hydronic system use?
Plain water transfers heat slightly better and costs nothing, so it suits fully indoor systems that will never freeze. Glycol (a non-toxic antifreeze) is necessary for anything exposed to freezing temperatures — snowmelt systems, unheated garages, or buildings that may be left unheated in winter — because it prevents pipes from bursting. The trade-off is that glycol modestly reduces heat transfer efficiency and needs periodic testing and eventual replacement.
Why is a radiant floor cold in spots or overall?
Common causes are air trapped in the loops, a failed or stuck circulator, a closed or unbalanced zone valve or manifold loop, low system pressure, or a control/heat-source issue. Because radiant tubing is hidden in the floor, diagnosing the cause well takes someone who understands the whole system rather than just the visible symptom.
What causes air to get into a hydronic system?
Air enters from fresh fill water, from a drop in system pressure that releases dissolved gas out of solution, from small leaks drawing air in, or after any service work that opens the loops. Trapped air causes cold spots, gurgling noise, and air-locked pumps. A properly designed system uses a good air separator and purge points so air is removed automatically; if a system is constantly needing to be bled, the underlying issue is usually a design or pressure problem rather than the bleeding itself.
Is radiant snowmelt worth the investment?
For the right property, yes. On a steep or shaded driveway, heated walkways, or anywhere ice is a real safety or liability concern, a snowmelt system pays off in safety and convenience — no plowing, no shoveling, and no corrosive salt. It's a larger upfront investment and is most cost-effective when installed as concrete is being poured, which is why it tends to make the most sense for new builds and full driveway repours. Boilers deliver powerful, weather-independent heat and excel in very cold climates and high-demand buildings. Air-to-water heat pumps are all-electric, highly efficient over most of the heating season, and many can also provide cooling — and they pair well with radiant floors. What are the best boiler controls?
Good controls are what make a hydronic system efficient and comfortable, more than any particular equipment brand. Outdoor-reset controls that adjust water temperature to match outdoor conditions, smart zoning, and properly set mixing valves are what deliver even comfort and the lowest fuel bills. Correct setup and commissioning matter more than which control brand is used.
How long does a hydronic heating system last?
Well-installed and maintained hydronic components tend to be long-lived: quality boilers commonly last 15–25+ years, PEX tubing embedded in a slab is typically rated for 50+ years and often outlasts the building's other mechanical systems, and circulators and valves are generally the components most likely to need earlier replacement or service.
