How snowmelt systems work
A radiant snowmelt system embeds tubing in a concrete or paver base — a driveway, walkway, stairway, or patio — the same way radiant floor tubing is embedded in an interior slab. Warm fluid, always a glycol/water mixture rather than plain water since the tubing is exposed to freezing temperatures, circulates through the loops and keeps the surface warm enough to melt falling snow and prevent ice from forming, without a person ever needing to shovel, plow, or salt the surface.
Snowmelt systems are typically controlled automatically by a combination of a snow/moisture sensor and an outdoor temperature sensor: the system activates when precipitation and cold temperatures are both detected, and shuts off (or drops to a lower "idle" temperature to stay ready) once conditions clear, so it isn't running needlessly. Because outdoor slabs need a higher heat output than indoor radiant floors — melting snow requires overcoming both the latent heat of melting ice and ongoing heat loss to cold air — snowmelt systems typically run hotter supply water and closer tubing spacing than indoor radiant heat.

For a full driveway, hydronic snowmelt is usually the more economical choice to operate, particularly if a home's existing (or planned) boiler or heat pump has spare capacity. Electric systems tend to win out for smaller, isolated areas like entry steps or a short walkway where running new hydronic piping wouldn't be worth the complexity.
Installation timing matters
Because the tubing is embedded in the concrete itself, snowmelt is dramatically easier and less expensive to install when a driveway or walkway is being newly poured or repoured than to retrofit into existing concrete. Retrofitting typically means removing and repouring the slab, which adds substantial cost. This is why snowmelt is most commonly installed on new construction, full driveway replacements, or major renovations rather than added later as a stand-alone upgrade.

As with all hydronic work, costs vary by area, climate design requirements, tubing spacing, and heat source — treat these as general planning ranges rather than quotes:

Is snowmelt worth it?
Snowmelt is a discretionary comfort-and-safety investment rather than a necessity, so whether it "pays off" depends on the property. It tends to make the most sense for:
- Steep, shaded, or north-facing driveways where ice is a persistent safety hazard
- Properties in snowy climates where plowing or shoveling is frequent and burdensome
- Homes where liability (e.g., frequent visitors, elderly residents, or a business entrance) makes ice a real risk
- New construction or full driveway repours, where the marginal cost of adding tubing is much lower than a standalone retrofit
It's a poor fit for mild climates with infrequent snow, or as an add-on to a driveway that isn't already being replaced, given the cost of breaking out and repouring concrete just to add tubing.
